Sensei Mark Amerio started martial arts in 1981 at the age of 11 and primarily studied under Steve Kijewski earning his 1st degree black belt in Kempo-Goju Karate in 1988. He continued to study with Steve Kijewski and also Frank Novak (Kedzie Karate-Chicago) and was promoted up to 3rd Degree black belt in 1996. Throughout some of that time period Mark was away at college and started/ran the Illini Karate Club at the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana for 2 years while studying to get his degree in electrical engineering.
Unfortunately Steve Kijewski closed his school in 1998 and Frank Novak passed away leaving him without an active place to train. Throughout the next few years, he continued to train and teach from his home. In 2003 he looked up an old karate acquaintance of his past instructors named Ed Quick and began training at Ed Quick’s Karate in Chicago. He has also trained in Jiu Jitsu at Gotia’s Martial Arts and LA Boxing (Orland Park, IL).
Mark’s approach to karate is to continue to learn and evolve his style of karate which stresses realistic and effective self-defense.
Currently Mark is a 5th degree black belt under Grand Master Bob Janecek. He often travels for work, but does continue to train on the road at various martial arts schools. When home, he trains and teaches classes at Dragon Fire Karate (New Lenox, IL). Mark is also a member of the American Karate Association.
